The Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP) is designed to test students in various academic areas. There are four different tests that are administered as part of the TCAP:
The TCAP Achievement tests students in elementary
school beginning in first grade in areas including math, reading comprehension, science, social studies and English.
- Students in grades 1 through 8 take the TCAP Achievement tests each spring.
- The TCAP Competency test has been replaced by the Gateway exams for the graduation requirement.
- TheWriting Assessment tests a student's writing ability and is graded on a scale from 1-6, with 6 being the highest.
- Students in grades 5, 8, and 11 take the Writing Assessment instead of grades 4, 7, and 11.
- The Gateway exams are designed to test students in Algebra I, Biology I, and English II. Students are required to pass the Gateway exam in Algebra I, Biology I, and English II in order to receive a high school diploma.
- Students take the Gateway exam at the end of the semester that they are enrolled in Algebra I, Biology I, and English II.
