Morgan County Students Attend SCOPE
On March 8, 2002, students from Morgan County joined others from all around the state of Tennessee to meet in Nashville. Called SCOPE, this meeting was designed for students and was sponsored by the Tennessee School Board Association. Here students got the privilege to voice their opinion about what they thought would improve their school systems. There were a total of nine people from Morgan County who attended SCOPE.
At the conference, students from across the state were separated into sixteen groups. In these groups, they were given a challenge to design different ways to improve their imaginary school system. Many suggestions were taken. From those, the students elected one that was the most important to them. Then two groups joined together to debate which suggestion was more essential to the school system. After discussion and approval, the entire group met once again for the final debate. This included eight people with eight different suggestions that could improve our schools.
One of the ideas that was considered at the final meeting was offered by Donita Seiber. She stated in her group that in her school they had a Renaissance Program, which helped to bring incentives such as local businesses giving discounts and free admission to school-related activites. The students in Morgan County are appreciative of this program. Students try harder for better grades so that they can become part of the program.
The students enjoyed the meeting and the trip to Nashville. It gave them a different understanding of how our school board works and just how much they accomplish. We would like to thank our local school board for their support. We would like to give a special thanks to Debbie Lively and Judy Hurst for taking time out of their busy days to attend the conference with us.
Those students attending SCOPES from Morgan County included: Michelle Torgler from Oakdale; Kristen Jones and Seth Young from Sunbright; Don Potter and Jessica Smith from Career and Technical Center; Lacey Armes and Donita Seiber from Wartburg. Debbie Lively, Morgan County School Board Member and Judy Hurst, Wartburg Central Middle School Principal, also attended.
